10 Weeks and Counting

As we enter February it is indeed crunch time. We are all anxious to see one another’s work.
Please be in touch with Therese Ramsey about small quilts.
Challenge quilts will be submitted with exhibit quilts but if you have questions visit with Debbie Wheeler.
Dorothy is waiting with bated breath for your registration — your quilt does not have to be done. She needs approximate size and a color photo in order to make sure the quilts don’t clash when hanging together.
And look out: JoeAnn Reaves is on the hunt for volunteers. Everyone will be needed to put on a successful quilt show. There are plenty of jobs where you can be seated.
And if you have big strong kids or grandkids or know of some folks who volunteer, help with set up and tear down is appreciated. See Barb Hamernick.

Show dates are April 12-13.

Stitched, The Film

Mark your calendar for Feb. 28.
We have a very special program for February guild meeting: a showing of Stitched, The Film. Here are the details: Stitched is a fun-filled documentary following three quilters racing to complete their entries for the International Quilt Festival, the largest quilt show in the nation. The Houston show draws more than 50,000 quilters including three artists who created some controversy with their work. Quilting legend Caryl Bryer Fallert was the first to win a major prize for her quilt made with a sewing machine. She mentored Hollis Chatelain who caused a stir when she won an award for a painted quilt. And Hollis mentored Randall Cook who sparked controversy with his quilt of a male nude. In this 72-minute documentary, these quilters create their pieces to compete in the 2010 quilt show.

Quilt Registration

Categories/Registration
Entry Rules:
Tomorrow’s Heirlooms XIII QUILT Show Registration
April 12-13, 2013 Benton County Fairgrounds, 7640 SW Regional Airport Blvd, Bentonville, AR
1. All entries must have been completed between March 13, 2011, and March 16, 2013.
2. Quilts must be pre-registered for entry NO LATER THAN Saturday, March 2, 2013.
3. Quilts must be delivered to a designated drop-off location NO LATER THAN March 16, 2013. (See
below for drop off locations)
4. An entrant may enter no more than two quilts in each category. (Exception: The Guild
Challenge, which allows only one)
5. A four-inch sleeve must be securely attached to the top of each quilt. (Exception: Miniature quilts
display items require no sleeve.)
6. A registration form with an attached COLOR photograph, preferably 3” x 5”, but NO LARGER than
4”    x 6”, of the entry. Print the entrant’s name, the name of the quilt, and the width and length in inches on
the back of the photograph. DO NOT SEND PHOTOS BY E-MAIL OR ON PLAIN PAPER. Photos become the property of Q.U.I.L.T. of NWA. The photo should clearly show the quilt. 7. Quilts made from convenience fabric or “cheater cloth” will not be accepted. (Exception: “Children’s Quilt” category) 8. All entries must be quilted by hand, machine, or a combination of the two. (Exception: quilts entered in “Other Techniques – Quilts,” and/or “Art Quilt,”) 9. Each quilt must be constructed and quilted by the person(s) named on the registration form. In the case of group quilts, the group name will be listed in the event directory. Group contributors will be
acknowledged on the card displayed with the quilt during the show. (Exception: “Time Span Quilt” category if the original quilter is unknown.) 10. If the quilt was pieced and/or appliquéd by one person and quilted by another, both names will appear in the event directory and on the display card. In some categories where a winning entry is pieced or appliquéd by one person and quilted by another, show ribbons will be awarded to both quilt makers. These categories are indicated by a double asterisk in the quilt categories section below.
11. The show sponsors reserve the right to move a quilt to a category other than the one in which it was entered. 12. A Quilt Identification Form must be attached, with at least two safety pins, to the right lower corner of the back of each entry. Quilts should be folded so that the Quilt Identification Form is visible.
13. Sponsor Liability: Every effort will be made to assure the safety of each quilt. Neither the QUILT Guild Show Chairperson, the QUILT Guild of NWA, nor the Benton County Fairgrounds may be held responsible for loss or damage to entry(s). Insurance coverage is the responsibility of the entry owner. Special handling cannot be guaranteed unless the quilt is submitted in a labeled box.
14. SALE OF QUILTS: QUILT of NWA will charge a 10% fee for quilts sold during the show. Quilts offered for sale must remain displayed through the final hour of public viewing.
15. Entrants are responsible for citing quilt pattern sources or inspiration and/or for obtaining display permission for show entries even if a pattern is modified. For example, a quilter who uses a pattern found in a book, magazine, or workshop should cite the source or inspiration of the pattern or obtain permission to display the quilt in public (if required). (See registration form for details).
2013 QUILT SHOW Categories:
There are no size restrictions by category unless specified in the category description. The quilts should be placed in categories based on the intent of the quilter entrant. Example: Is it a Bed Quilt vs. Large Wall Hanging?
Bed Pieced Quilt: **
A bed quilt completely pieced using a traditional, contemporary, or original design or block.
Bed Hand Appliquéd Quilt: **A bed quilt primarily showcasing the art of appliqué. It must be appliquéd by hand. Machine or hand piecing is acceptable for background, sashing, or border.
Bed Machine Appliqué Quilt: **
A bed quilt primarily showcasing the art of appliqué. It must be appliquéd by machine. Machine or hand piecing is acceptable for background, sashing, or border.
Bed Mixed Techniques: **
A bed quilt featuring a combination of techniques, including but not limited to piecing, appliqué, fabric manipulation, or folding. It may be a traditional, contemporary, or original design.\
Bed Hand Quilted:
A bed quilt that is entirely hand quilted. A quilt entered into this category must be completely hand quilted by one quilter. This category showcases the skills of a quilt maker who carries on the tradition of hand quilting. The quilt will be judged solely on the quality of the hand quilting.
Bed Machine Quilted: ** A bed quilt completely machine quilted by one quilter. This category showcases the art and skills of the
home or long arm quilter. The quilt will be judged solely on the quality of the machine quilting.
Large Pieced Wall Hanging: **
A pieced quilt designed to hang on a wall. The pieced design may be traditional, contemporary, or original. Large Appliquéd Wall Hanging: **
An appliquéd quilt designed to hang on a wall. It may be appliquéd by hand or machine. A small amount of piecing is acceptable for background, sashing, or border.
Wall Hanging Mixed Techniques: **
A quilt designed to hang on a wall, featuring a combination of techniques, including but not exclusive of piecing, appliqué, fabric manipulation, folding, etc. It may be a traditional, contemporary, or original design.
Small Wall Hanging: Total circumference no larger than 120 inches. ** A small quilt designed to hang on a wall, featuring any quilting or embellishment technique. The size
restriction encourages the quilt maker to create a fabric entry in small scale.
Miniature Quilts: Maximum width 24 inches; maximum length 24 inches.
A miniature quilt is by definition the miniaturization (reduced or scaled down) design of a full size bed quilt. By accurately reducing the size of the quilt blocks and components, the quilter produces an exact replica of a full size quilt.
Pictorial Quilts: ** Quilts specifically showcasing landscapes, buildings/architectural designs, portraits, animals, or other subjects representing a drawing, painting, or photograph.
Time Span Quilts: ** Quilts completed by the entrant using old quilt tops or blocks made by another quilt maker (known or unknown) from the past. This category celebrates the quilter who preserves and honors the makers of old quilts.
Art Quilts: A quilt of any size, shape, or technique that doesn’t fall within one of the other listed categories is acceptable. An art quilt is the work of one quilt artist and must consist of the basic fabric sandwich: a top, batting, and backing. Originality, creativity, and innovation MUST be showcased in the piece. The piece must contain hand or machine quilting. The quilt maker may use a variety of techniques as long as fabric and quilting form the basis of the piece. The artist may incorporate
– a traditional block or design used in a new or unusual manner,
– commercial or hand dyed fabric,
– an original design, or
– an innovative technique using fabric, fiber, thread, or embellishments.
Other Techniques – Quilts: ** Yo-Yo, Cathedral Windows, Whole Cloth, Crazy Quilt, Tied quilt, Hand or Machine Embroidery, etc.
Guild Challenge Quilt Rules: Open to Guild Members Only    (only one submission per member)
THEME: Holiday Dash    Contact Person: Debbie Wheeler: debbie.wheeler86@yahoo.com    The theme is holiday, with a churn of dash, or more precisely with a churn dash block somewhere in the quilt (must be recognizable). The quilt should be between 120” and 160”, with sides measuring at least 30”, but no more than 40” each, if your quilt is square or rectangular.
Holiday…pick your favorite, or even your mom’s favorite and give it as a gift after the show! No holiday is off limits, so use your imagination or be traditional – it’s up to you!
NOTE: This year the top eight winning QUILT Guild Challenge Quilts will be entered into the 2013 AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge contest in Grand Rapids. QUILT Guild Challenge Quilt entrants must agree to enter their quilt into this contest if it is selected by the guild show judge as one of the top eight winning quilts
Beginner Quilts: One of the first two quilts pieced/appliquéd and quilted solely by an entrant. Any entry completed by more than one person will be transferred to another category.
Children’s Quilts: A quilt made by a child or group of children under the age of 18 years. (A non-judged category)
Baby Quilts: Total circumference no larger than 240 inches. A quilt specifically made for a baby. Any technique may be used, but must consist of the basic fabric sandwich: a top, batting, and backing.
** Indicates categories in which ribbons will be awarded to the entrant who pieces and/or appliqués the entry AND the quilter who hand and/or machine quilts the entry, if different.

Challenge 2013

Since the weather seems to be encouraging us to stay in quilt, I want to remind everyone about our guild 2013 challenge. Debbie Wheeler is chairwoman, and chose this year’s theme “Holiday”.

You get to pick a holiday, any holiday. I have seen Chinese New Year, Halloween and Father’s Day depicted, and I have only seen a few. Hope you are working to finish your entry.

Details are under the quilt show header on the right side of the page. YOU MUST INCLUDE A VISIBLE CHURN DASH BLOCK ON THE FRONT OF YOUR QUILT!

Here is an example of a churn dash:

Remember if you want to be considered for inclusion in our entry for the AQS Ultimate Quilt Guild Challenge, you will need to add a sleeve that conforms to AQS guidelines. The written guidelines are also under the quilt show header but I am attaching a link to video instructions. You may need to copy and paste in your browser in order to open the link.

Happy Quilting!

Mystery Experts to Speak to QUILT

Mystery quilt experts Theresa Ward and Sharon Lorfing will present a program on mystery quilts at the Jan. 24 meeting of Quilters United in Learning Together.
Ward and Lorfing have each quilted for over 20 years. Ward is an award winning long-arm quilter and teacher and Lorfing has worked and taught in quilt shops in the Kansas City area over the last 10 years. In 2002, they started hosting a mystery quilt lock-in annually and designing their own patterns for it. Ward does most of the design work while Lorfing writes the pattern instructions.
Their patterns proved popular so they started Quilt Patterns by Wing Designs and now offer patterns for sale.
The guild meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale.
Ward and Lorfing will lead a mystery quilt class at Central United Methodist Church in Rogers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 25. Cost is $35. For more information contact Therese Ramsey at threrese.ramsey@gmail.com

Happy 2013! Quilt Show is Near!!!

Hi all. It is 2013 and that means it is quilt show time. Your 2013 quilt show committee needs your help getting the word out about the show. We have postcards available for you to drop off at shops, club meetings, stores, wherever. If you are taking the donation quilt somewhere, please take postcards with you. These make excellent bookmarks yet are large enough to post on bulletin boards and not get lost. Please contact Leeanna to pick up some cards.
